Press release 10/08/2017: The Municipality of Hersonissos signed a cooperation agreement with Costa Nostrum to certify 4 municipal beaches as Costa Nostrum - Sustainable Beaches

  • 2017 08 10

The Municipality of Hersonissos, acting within the framework of the sustainable policy which applies to all its actions, as an active member of the Covenant of Mayors, as well as, under the Sustainable Tourism Development Plan, signed a cooperation agreement with Costa Nostrum Ltd for the certification of four (4) municipal beaches, which meet the requirements of the award-winning, innovative "Costa Nostrum-Sustainable Beaches" certification protocol in order to gain a significant and internationally recognized proof of sustainable development.

The current municipal authority, the Mayor of Hersonissos Mr. Mastorakis G., in cooperation with the President of Damal SA, Mr. Vasilakis K., recognizing the ever increasing need for sustainable beach management, based on the requirements of international standards, signed the specific cooperation agreement in order to create an additional strong incentive for strengthening the sustainable tourism model through the "sustainable management of the beaches", but also to increase the level of services provided without creating environmental or social pressures in the region.

This action is part of a comprehensive (Integrated) Management Plan and Sustainable Development of the coastal areas of the Hersonissos Municipality and will be implemented initially for the certification of the beaches of Estrayromenos, Potamos, Sarandari and west of Sarantari.

Both, the Mayor Mr. Mastorakis G., the President of DAMAL SA Mr. Vassilakis K. and the Founder and General Manager of Costa Nostrum Mr. Zisimopoulos V. expressed their absolute satisfaction for the achievement of the specific cooperation and promised to make their best for the environmental upgrading and protection of the beaches of the Hersonissos.

The Municipality of Hersonissos:

The Municipality of Hersonissos extends to the eastern part of Crete, between its two main urban centers, Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos. Its area amounts to 271.6 km2, with a coastline exceeding 58 km.

The northern part of Hersonissos belongs to the developed tourist coastal areas of northern Crete and is a pole of attraction for thousands of visitors each year. This makes the Municipality of Hersonissos one of the largest tourist destinations in Greece, with more than one million (1,000,000) visitors a year, registering more than eight million (8,000,000) nights, at about seventy five thousand (75,000) beds, of all categories.

The tourist infrastructures developed in the area includes high-quality hotels and accommodations, as well as blue-flagged beaches. Due to the significant tourist activity that develops in the area, the Hersonissos Municipality claims a significant part of the national annual tourist allocation. Equally important and rich are the ecological reserve of the Municipality and the uniqueness of its biodiversity.

The permanent population of the Hersonissos Municipality, based on the latest census (2011), is 26.717 inhabitants; with the actual inhabitants exceeding 50.000 due to the developed tourist sector that creates increased employment opportunities.

For the second consecutive year the municipality of Agios Nikolaos Certifies 4 Municipal Beaches as Costa Nostrum – Sustainable Beaches

  • 2017 07 31

A cooperation agreement signed between Costa Nostrum Ltd and DAEAN for the recertification of four municipal beaches of the municipality of Agios Nikolaos Crete as Costa Nostrum – Sustainable Beaches. On the same day, these four beaches were re-audited. The four beaches of the Agios Nikolaos Municipality that are part of the certified sustainable beaches of Costa Nostrum - Sustainable Beaches are: Almiros Beach, Voulisma Beach, Kitroplatia Beach and Schisma Beach.

It is reminded that the Municipality of Aghios Nikolaos pioneered once again, during 2016; it was the first Municipality nationwide that decided to certify its beautiful beaches as Costa Nostrum - Sustainable Beaches, warmly supporting innovative ideas while at the same time the main motivation was to upgrade its tourist product and spread the sustainable tourist model. In this way acquired a highly competitive advantage over the competition.

The first year of adoption and implementation of certification Protocol Nostrum Costa – Sustainable Beaches deemed as extremely positive after following a survey conducted through questionnaires at certified beaches and in approximately 1000 completed questionnaires, the response of people were extremely positive in more than 80%. At the same time, at the end of last tourist season, from the analysis of the survey results, the municipality had a complete "radiography" of what the bathers “want” in each certified beach and in total. Taking into account the requirements of the bathers and by leveraging the upgrade of services at all levels, and in line with modern requirements, the municipality of Agios Nikolaos and DAEAN (as the managing authority of the specific beaches) proceeded to the "placement" of free Wi-Fi network at the certified sustainable beaches.

With this particular upgrade, the services provided within the certified beaches and having covered the largest and most important part (cleanliness, services provided to people with special needs, environmental protection, public information, etc.) of the Costa Nostrum - Sustainable Beaches certification standards, Municipality of Agios Nikolaos managed to increase the overall rating of its certified beaches.

Both the top DAEAN executives (Mr. Michalis Farsaris, DAEAN President and Mr. Michalis Garefalakis, CEO of DAEAN) and Costa Nostrum founder and general manager Mr. Vassilis Zisimopoulos expressed their absolute satisfaction with the continuation of their cooperation, for second consecutive year and their desire to extend this certification to other beaches of the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos. At the same time, they expressed their desire to further upgrade the services provided in order to achieve the highest possible rating of all certified beaches, but also to increase the satisfaction of the bathers, a goal that can only be achieved through the excellent cooperation and contribution of all the parties involved - DAEAN, the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos and Costa Nostrum.

Green Destinations and Costa Nostrum - Sustainable Beaches sign Partnership Agreement

  • 2017 04 20
PRESS RELEASE 20/04/2017

Green Destinations and Costa Nostrum - Sustainable Beaches have agreed to cooperate in promoting sustainable tourism development, in particular for sustainable beaches and destinations. In this way, they create better opportunities for sustainable destinations and beaches to generate environmental, social and economic benefits for tourists and for the local business community. To this end both parties signed a Partnership Agreement.

The two organizations are very complementary to each other: Green Destinations is looking at destinations as a whole, but has no certification for beaches, while Costa Nostrum can ensure a sustainable beach management and development, as well as improved service provided for the bathers; both of them are the focus of «Costa Nostrum - Sustainable Beaches».

Green Destinations is a non-profit organization supporting tourism destinations to become more sustainable. A Green Destinations Certification & Awards program has been developed on the basis of the Green Destinations Standard, and 160 destinations already received the Award. This standard is the leading international set of criteria to measure, monitor and improve the sustainable management of entire destinations, islands and regions. It makes sustainable development concrete, objective and demonstrable; covering all important themes: Destination Management, Nature & Scenery, Environment & Climate, Culture & Tradition, Social Well-being, and Business & Hospitality. In 2016 the Green Destinations Standard was officially recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).

Costa Nostrum (= our coast) – Sustainable Beaches is an award winning innovative certification standard based on specific indicators and criteria (environmental, social and economic), through the effect of which, the sustainable management, development, evaluation and certification of any beach may be achieved in an objective manner, while a healthy competitive environment for every beach management body is created. It also constitutes a free online information portal for tourists visiting the Mediterranean Sea, in regard to the infrastructure, classification and characteristics (natural – technical) of all Costa Nostrum Sustainable Beaches, as visitors will be able to search for the certified Costa Nostrum Sustainable Beaches and choose accordingly depending on their personal requirements. Finally, it is a “tool” for the global recognition and promotion of the certified Costa Nostrum Sustainable Beaches, as well as of any affiliated business of local traditional products nearby the awarded beach.
The standard can be applied at all Mediterranean beaches, with a view to promote their sustainable development, their environmental protection and the sustainable economic development and general welfare of the society at the nearby areas.
It can be implemented by all municipalities of the countries around the Mediterranean, as well as, by hotel units that financially exploit a number of beaches with the same positive results.

The common goal of Green Destinations and Costa Nostrum - Sustainable Beaches is the qualitative improvement of the tourist product, the environmental protection of tourism destinations, the increase of tourist satisfaction, as well as the promotion of sustainable tourism principles.

The Partnership Agreement was signed by Mr. Albert Salman, President of Green Destinations and by Mr. Vasilis Zisimopoulos, CEO and founder of Costa Nostrum Ltd.

The cooperation is limited to Green Destinations’ support to the beach certification offered by Costa Nostrum - Sustainable Beaches.

Green Destinations is currently negotiating with two other parties who will be Green Destinations Representative Organisation in Greece, for destination certification and for the QualityCoast Awards.”
